Major Changes in Electrosurgery Test Technology-- For the first time ever, commercially available test technology for electrosurgery units has evolved to include analyzers that can be used as a calibration tool (because of the 1% of reading accuracy) and will also work with major new systems available from major manufacturers. Many of these new platforms require special features and capabilities not previously available in commercially available analyzers. This new test technology platform makes it possible to measure complex pulsed waveforms. A demo of some of these unique waveforms and testing of them will be part of the presentation. Presented by: Michael Erwine, Strategic Accounts Manager for BC Group International. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CBET Certification Exam Preparation Review (Part 1) – Presented by: Ron Snodgrass, CBET, CCE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Starting an In-House Imaging Equipment Service Program – We will examine the pros and cons of bringing the service of imaging equipment into the hospital. Topics covered include: evaluating your chances for success, obstacles you will encounter, steps to assure success, how to sell to department managers and administrators and how to determine whether to move quickly or gradually into a complete in-house imaging service program. Your interaction and participation will be very much encouraged. Presented by: Patrick Lynch, CBET, CCE – Biomedical Support Specialist, GMI Global Medical Imaging, Charlotte, North Carolina --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction to Computer Network Troubleshooting – An overview of basic network troubleshooting tools to include Ping, Traceroute, Netstat, NSLookup, etc. An introduction to a protocol analyzer (wireshark) will also be included. Please bring laptops as this is intended to be a hands-on experience. Presented by: Jay Taylor M.Ed., CCNA – Instructor, Owens Community College, Toledo Ohio --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HDTV, the OR, and the PACS Network – What Biomeds Need to Know About All Three (Part 2) -- HDTV, OR video systems, and even the PACS network have more in common than one might expect. All three have long established system specifications and quality standards relating to the entire image acquisition, transmission and display chain. This session will focus on a topic of personal interest to nearly everyone (especially with the pending digital TV “change-over” in February 2009), HDTV, and how it relates to displayed image quality in the clinical setting where it matters most. Keynote Address - Robert H. Stiefel *** The Future of BMETs and CEs *** One who helped launch the Clinical Engineering Profession in the 1960s now looks to the future of the Biomedical Equipment Technician and the Clinical Engineering profession. Robert is currently the chair of AAMI’s Board of Directors and is the Director of the Clinical Engineering Department at the University of Maryland Medical System.
The Fine Art of Juggling - Do you commonly feel like you have 20 Balls in the Air? Some of those balls are from work, from home, personal, from family & friends and some we don’t know where they came from and how to get rid of them. Did you see your self in any of these situations: - Do you have to write things down to get them done? - Do you make lists of things to do when you drive back and forth to work? - Did you forget to do something really important this past week? - Did you make all of your kid’s sports games? - Did you see the movie “Multiplicity” with Michael Keaton and want to meet the gentleman who cloned him? - When was the last time you spent several hours doing a hobby you really enjoy? This session will talk about Juggling: work, personal and family. Attendees must be willing to participate in learning how to juggle with bean bags and in their personal lives. Personal planning will also be talked about to set: Financial Goals, Educational Goals, Career Goals, Family Goals, Marketing Yourself, and Planning for yourself. Presented by: Myron Hartman MS, SASHE, CCE, CRES, CBET – Program Coordinator of the BET program for Penn State University at the New Kensington Campus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CBET Certification Exam Preparation Review (Part 2) – Presented by: Ron Snodgrass, CBET, CCE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Successful Customer Relations Skills – Interpersonal communications is a difficult process under normal circumstances. The various personalities involved tend to be detrimental to good communications. When the responsibility of customer satisfaction is added, we must exercise specific skills and processes to eliminate misunderstandings and unrealistic expectations. This session will present specific steps necessary to become successful at customer relations. At the conclusion of the Successful Customer Relations Skills seminar, attendees will be able to: - Identify the factors that inhibit effective communications - Identify the factors that aid effective communications - Identify the critical aspects of behavior and state how they inhibit communication - Identify the four behavior types and state how to interact effectively with them - Identify and modify your own behavior type to effectively adapt to the behavior of others - Use probing and informing techniques effectively - Identify the cause of customer dissatisfaction and use appropriate techniques to effectively manage customer dissatisfaction Presented by: Manny Roman, CRES, DITEC Incorporated, Solon, Ohio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Introduction to Wireless Computer Networks – This session will provide an overview of wireless networks, to include: - An introduction to basic RF theory - What are the benefits and weaknesses of Wireless Technology? - What are the current standards for WLAN’s and how do they compare? - What techniques are available to help secure WLANs? - Where are wireless technologies commonly used? - What components are required to build a WLAN, what are their functions, and how are they configured? Presented by: Jay Taylor M.Ed., CCNA – Instructor, Owens Community College, Toledo Ohio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Managing Today’s Filmless Imaging Departments - Managing today’s digital imaging networks requires the ability to diagnose any of a wide variety of issues. Potential problems range from image quality problems due to equipment calibration/malfunction, network/hardware connectivity problems, or software related and DICOM image transfer issues. The first skill necessary is the ability to determine whether the problem is hardware or software related. In fact, 70-80% of all digital image (“DICOM”) problems are hardware related. Once the problem has been linked to software or DICOM, the engineer needs to be able to break down the communications between the 2 systems and analyze why the software communication failed. This presentation is designed to give an overview of the important concepts in the TCP/IP protocol that are used to help evaluate hardware connectivity problems. Also covered will be an introduction to PACS and DICOM that will give insight to the fundamentals of DICOM that are required to be able to analyze connectivity issues. Presented by: Mike Petelin, RSTI - Radiological Service Training Institute, Solon, Ohio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Clinical Engineer’s role in a Technology Upgrade – Learn about the strategic/business aspects and the important do’s and don’ts related to a technology upgrade. Discussion will take place on the roles of the Biomedical Engineer, Nursing and Purchasing, as well as the typical process and roadblock and how the Clinical Engineer can positively impact the process. Presented by: Universal Hospital Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Effective Decision Making – In today’s rapidly changing environment, making a timely and appropriate decision will affect the future of your business. Decision making can sometimes be flip of the coin but often requires an effective logical procedure. This session will cover some proper techniques for effective decision making. Target audience – Biomedical, Clinical and Radiology engineering professionals desiring to benefit from the increasing opportunities in radiology service. Presented by: Manny Roman, CRES, DITEC Incorporated ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction to Computer Network Security- An overview of Network Security to include: - Security Threats - Firewall Technology - A description of Virus, WORM, Trojan, etc. - Network Defense Presented by: Jay Taylor M.Ed., CCNA, Instructor, Owens Community College, Toledo Ohio ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
